Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy works to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat patients from birth through adulthood.  Speech Therapists teach patients skills designed to restore the ability to communicate, either in a normal or assisted manner.  Treatments by speech therapists may include speech disorders (misarticulation of sounds or stuttering), difficulty with voice and resonance, social communication, cognitive-communication disorders (organizing thoughts, paying attention, remembering, planning, and problem-solving), and swallowing disorders.  These disorders may be congenital or acquired from neurological disorder, stroke, traumatic brain injury, or dementia.  Our speech therapist is able to complete Modified Barium Swallow Study, or MBS.  This test is an x-ray of the swallowing mechanism to assess disorders of the oral and pharyngeal phases of the swallow and to assist in development of compensatory techniques to decrease swallowing difficulties.
