Swing Bed Programs

To serve the needs of smaller hospitals and communities, Medicare has established coverage for ‘Swing Bed’ programs. Swing Bed is the term Medicare uses to describe a hospital room that can switch from acute care status to skilled care status. The actual bed/room does not change; what changes is the level of care that the patient in that room receives.

Summersville Regional Medical Center offers a Swing Bed Program as an alternative to prolonged hospitalization or short term nursing facility placement for post-acute extended care. The swing bed program provides skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services. This may include IV therapy as well as physical/occupational and speech therapy. There are 15 beds that are dedicated to this treatment at SRMC. Our personable and well trained staff work diligently to get patients stronger and more independent so that their transition home is as successful as possible.

When that transition time comes, there are specialized personnel who will work with the health care team (including family and in-home services) to craft a care plan that is perfect for you. They will even follow-up with you and your care team after your transfer to make sure medications, accommodations, and follow-up visits have been arranged properly.

Common diagnoses treated in this program include patients with extended IV therapy needs, orthopedic surgeries (hip/knee replacements), fractures, post-surgical procedures, neurological disorders (stroke), and generalized weakness due to CHF, COPD, pneumonia, and other chronic conditions.

The length of stay in Swing Bed is dependent upon individual patient needs and progress. Swing Bed is not intended for permanent placement; it is for continued care until the patient returns home or transfers to a facility for longer term care.

When it comes to you getting back on your feet, we leave nothing to chance. Through this service you can take advantage of all SRMC has to offer, without navigating a complicated network of physical and technical transfers before you are ready to settle back in at home.
